San Juan Capistrano, CA – Surfing America, the national governing body for surfing in the USA, is gearing up for the annual SIMA Surfing America USA Championships on the southside of the Huntington Beach Pier. The event, which decides the undisputed USA surfing champions by pooling top talent from the ESA, HSA, NSSA, TGSA, and WSA, is set for Huntington Beach during October because it is known for its optimal swell and weather conditions.

A stellar list of entrants is confirmed for this year including two-time Boys Under 14 Champion Riley Metcalf, and defending Girls Under 18 Champion Courtney Conlogue.

“The talent coming forward to compete this year in incredible,” said Surfing America Executive Director Mike Gerard. “We look forward to the best, most competitive USA Championships to date. Also, the USA Surf Team Trials will take place on Sunday the 28th–the day immediately following the Championships event. This one day Trials event will also be webcast and will conclude with the announcement of the 2008 USA Surf Team.”

In 2006, the USA Championships were noted as the premier event in American junior surfing, thanks to a WCT/WQS panel of judges, live scoring and four-person, twenty minute heats. Although, the event is youth focused, it still holds divisions for elder surfers as well.

The schedule of events is as follows:

October 22-23

Masters
Seniors
Legends
Junior Longboard
Mens Longboard
Senior Longboard
Girls Longboard
Womens Longboard
Mens Bodyboard
Womens Bodyboard

October 24-27

October 28

The final heat draw and schedule will be posted on surfingamerica.org on Friday, October 19th. There will also be a live webcast of the event at surfingamerica.org from October 26 – 28 which will highlight the youth finals as well as the 2008 USA Surf Team Trials.

Surfline, the Official Forecaster of the SIMA Surfing America USA Championships, indicated that the long range forecast looks promising with conditions kicking off on Monday with south and northwest groundswells mixing in for peaky head-high+ conditions and offshore winds.

The swell mix will gradually ease through mid-week, but will still offer plenty of good waves. And while there looks to be contestable conditions throughout the entire seven-day contest window, Surfline will be providing updates as conditions develop further.

This year, the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA), knowing the importance of this national championship event, has elevated itself to the burgeoning event’s title sponsor role after having been presenting sponsor since 2004.

“SIMA is stoked to support an event which brings the best young athletes together in Huntington Beach,” said Dick Baker, SIMA president. “SIMA and its members strongly believe it is important to support and promote young surfing talent in the U.S. and is proud to be the title sponsor of the USA Championships – an event which provides a platform for our up-and-coming young athletes to further develop and demonstrate their skills.”

Top finishers in Under 18 Boys, Under 16 Boys and Under 18 Girls will be included in the trials for the 2008 PacSun USA Surf Team which will compete for the United States in the 2008 Quiksilver/ISA World Junior Surfing Championships next May in France. The invite only trials will be held October 28th at the contest site in Huntington Beach. At the conclusion of Sunday’s trials the 2008 PacSun USA Surf Team will be named.

Following the trials on Tuesday, October 30th will be a friendly scrimmage with the Australian National Team. Team Australia, last year’s World Junior Championship team, will be in town for training as well as the rematch against the Americans. The informal event will take place in Huntington Beach at 9th Street.
