Bryce Dehaan Nabs Big Win at NSSA Southwest Explorer in Huntington
The Southwest Conference Explorer Season continued with event #3 at Brookhurst Street in Huntington Beach. And we are batting a thousand at this venue because everytime we come to town, Brookhurst lights up like a Christmas tree. But this was far from your normal HB contest even on its finest days. The notoriously sloping beachbreak shoulders turned into a classic barrel wonderland. Stiff Santa Ana offshore winds combined with a potent mix of building southern hemi and northwest ground swell supplying the perfect recipe for epic HB conditions. NSSA competitors were treated to flawless 4-8 foot tubes that looked more like Indo or Kirra or Hawaii’s north shore than the mainland west coast. The scoring criteria shifted from who got the most vertical turns or radical airs to who stood in the deepest shack. After catching one of the best barrels of the contest, Boys winner Luke Davis claimed, “that was the best wave I’ve ever surfed in Huntington!” 9’s and 10’s on the judges sheets were the norm rather than the exception. HB local Kyle Kennelly put on one of the most impressive and consistent tube riding displays in NSSA comp. His barrel riding skills earned him double finals placings in the Men’s and Juniors. This contest will go down in NSSA history as one of the all-time best waves for a west coast event.
QUOTES FROM THE FIELD
Dane Zaun (Men’s and Juniors division)-after his free surf session on the side of the contest area. “These are the best waves I have ever surfed!”
Hector Santa Maria (Juniors division)-after his fantastic five second frontside right barrel. “I can’t believe it is so good here. This is just like Puerto Rico.”
Dylan Goodale (Men’s and Juniors division)-after receiving a perfect 10 in his Juniors semifinal. “I barely got into the wave because my boards are so light. But I made the drop, pulled in and couldn’t see a thing. It was the best barrel I have ever had in a contest and the best I’ve ever seen California.”
Eli Viszolay (Juniors division)-after receiving a perfect 10 in the Juniors semifinals. “I made the late drop on a set left. It was a perfect wave. I came out and hit another section. It was amazing.”
Gabe Garcia (Juniors division)-after winning the Juniors final on one of the sickest backside tubes of the entire event. “I’m so stoked, I wanted to win this one so bad!”
BEST FREESURF AWARD ON THE SIDE OF THE CONTEST AREA
Brent Reilly was wowing the crowd pulling into one magnificent piping cylinder after another. He would have been unbeatable if he would have had a contest jersey on. Unfortunately, just after his stunning shack show, he was bumped in the Juniors semis but stoked that his equal 7th placing will move him to the top of the rankings.
SPECIAL THANKS
To the NSSA staff for braving the brutal desert storm conditions on the sand and getting the job done so our competitors could take advantage of the epic conditions.
