Nelscott Reef Status Changes to Yellow as Monster Swell is Forecast

Behemoth LLC changed the contest status today to yellow as a large
swell is forecast to arrive early next week. A yellow status means
there is a large swell forecast that is being monitored for potential
contest conditions. The status change marks the second status change of
the holding period.

A very large swell is being forecast to hit the Oregon coast on Tuesday
and Wednesday of next week. The most current forecast is calling for
20′ + swell, which could equate to 40-50′ or higher waves breaking on
the reef.

“At this point, swell and wind look favorable for contestable
conditions”, said John Forse, contest director. “The swell looks like
it has enough size, but like any large swell that comes ashore in
Oregon, wind is the wildcard. As of today, wind is forecast to be light
offshore, and if it holds, could be a set up for excellent waves at
Nelscott.”

The Nelscott Reef Tow in Classic operates under a three month holding
period. Forse is looking for the right combination of swell and wind -
large swell and light or no winds. On the few days a year that these
conditions occur, the waves at Nelscott Reef can be epic.

The forecasted swell arrives at a perfect time, coinciding with a
scheduled water safety class offered by Shawn Alladio and K38 Rescue.
The class is open to anyone that is interested. It is a 2 day class
focused on water safety and rescue for waverunner operators. Although
the course is geared toward tow surfers, Shawn will teach water rescue
in big wave conditions, which will benefit anyone operating a PWC in
open ocean conditions. There is limited space and registration is
required. Please e-mail k38rescue@aol.com for information.

Nelscott Reef’s web page has all the latest information and updates, as
well as a real time traffic light for contest status. Visit

The Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic is the only tow in contest on the
North American continent and Oregon’s only professional surf event. It
is also the only tow in contest to be certified carbon free by
Carbonfund.org.
