Transworld Stomps FUEL at Etnies’ Goofy vs. Regular Event
On February 23rd, hard core rivalry went down at Bear Mountain as Transworld Snowboarding’s regular-footed riders battled it out against FUEL TV’s goofy-footed riders. Hosted by Etnies, the First Annual Goofy vs. Regular (GVR) event showcased two teams going head-to-head for a shot at a $50,000 pot.
Putting his right foot forward was our own Transworld Snowboarding Editor-in-Chief, Kurt Hoy, who headed up the Regular Team. Forming his winning crew were Austin Smith, Joe Sexton, JP Walker, Markku Koski and Robbie Walker. FUEL TV Director John Stouffer, handpicked his team of goofy riders comprised of Kurt Wastell, Louis Vito, Ryan Thompson, Simon Chamberlain and Chris Bradshaw. These ten pre-qualified riders went straight into the Etnies GvR Finals.
Fighting for a spot alongside the Starting Ten were more than seventy top professional snowboarders from around the world. Kicking off at 8 a.m, the Open Qualifying Series narrowed talent down to thirty snowboarders who were divided between the Regular and Goofy teams.
Transworld’s PR Director, Stacy Ingenito, considers it a huge honor to be featured in this groundbreaking event. “Etnies is genius in putting FUEL against Transworld Snowboarding,” says Ingenito. “It is the perfect marriage of print and televised media, with the two coming together to promote action sports. The Transworld team is hungry for the win – for these riders, it’s all about pride.”
The brain behind GvR is Etnies Senior Vice President of Marketing, Don Brown. According to Brown, the event brings the action sports community together in a positive environment.
“It is encouraging to see all the sponsors and riders unite for this fun-spirited event,” says Brown. “After the success of Etnies GvR skate and surf competitions, it was a natural progression to bring the contest to snowboarding as well. In our committed relationship with Bear Mountain, Etnies looks forward to making this a yearly event.”
Instrumental in laying the foundation was Bear Mountain’s PR Director, Chris Riddle. In addition to Etnies, prominent sponsors included Lost Energy Drink and Sole Technology’s Thirty Two. Over 8,000 spectators turned up for tons of free swag, the live DJs, and the slope-side entertainment.
During the GvR Finals, riders threw down everything from double backs to thirty-foot airs. Stomping out the competition was Transworld’s regular team, comprised of the Starting Five and newcomers, Keegan Valaika, Stian Solberg, Erich Dummer, Dave Fortin, Scott Vine, Cory Cronk, Corey Noble, Beverly Vuilleumier and Desiree Melachon. GvR standout was Jusso Lavisto who landed $9,000 in prize money and earned the title of MVP.
The starting five for FUEL TV’s goofy team were joined by Forrest Bailey, Clayton Shoemaker, Tyler Flanagan, Jonas Michilot, Siguard Haga, Alex Sherman, Cody Boan, Kimmy Fasani, Harrison Gordon and Gabi Viteri.
Immediately following the snow jam, Ghostface Killah of the original Wu-Tang Clan, dropped beats at Bear Mountain’s main stage. The crowd partied down as checks were divvied up between team riders. Although FUEL’s goofy team may not have taken the win, each rider still walked away with $750.
Etnies Public Relations Manager, Ashton Maxfield adds, “The conditions and talent at this year’s event helped to make it a huge success. With our commitment to action sports, Etnies will undoubtedly make next year’s GVR just as good, if not better.”
