Canelle Bulard Wins ASP Grade-1 Buondi Pro Junior in Portugal
AMADO, Portugal (Monday, July 7, 2008) - Canelle Bulard (FRA), 16, claimed the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Europe Grade-1 Women’s Buondi Pro Junior, her maiden ASP Pro Junior title. Bulard, who defeated reigning ASP European Women’s Pro Junior Champion Pauline Ado (FRA) in the Final took the best out of the three foot (1 metre) waves to win the opening event of the 2008 season and take the lead of the regional ratings.
Bulard, who faced Ado, Marie Dejean (FRA) and Mariana Macedo (FRA) posted a solid 13.17 point heat tally (out of a possible 20) to take the win after getting through two rounds of competition today.
“I am so stoked to win the first event of the year,” Bulard said. “The waves were a bit messy and we all had a chance to get the title but it ends up well for me.”
Ado, who just came back from South Africa where she posted her best result ever by placing second in the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) Women’s 5-Star Mr. Price Pro, was today’s best perfomer but finished overall third.
“I am very happy with this result in South Africa,” Ado said. “I was very confident today but Marie (Dejean) and Canelle had the best waves and there was nothing I could do.”
Ado, a former amateur world champion, remains one of France’s top contenders on both ASP WQS and ASP Pro Junior tours and is a favourite for an unprecedented third regional ASP Pro Junior crown this year (she won in 2005 and 2007).
Apart from the women’s event, Round 1 of the ASP European Grade-1 Men’s Buondi Pro Junior was completed today.
Romain Cloitre (REU), reigning ASP European Pro Junior Champion, was the best surfer of the day and advanced through to Round 2. Cloitre, who had to start early in the contest due to a late entry, dominated Day 1 with a 14.66 point heat result (out of a possible 20).
“I am really happy to be back in Amado”, Cloitre said. “I won this event last year and I have no pressure right now, so I am enjoying my time. I am focused on the ASP WQS this year and I came here to train with my coach Yann Martin.”
Cloitre, who is on his first year among the ASP WQS contingent, missed the two first ASP European Pro Junior évents of the year and will not defend his regional crown.
“I was not able to attend the events before this one due to the ASP WQS Schedule, so I know there is no chance of a second ASP European Pro Junior title this year,” Cloitre said. “It seems like we are going to have waves this week so I hope I can go back home with an excellent result.”
The Buondi Pro Junior will restart tomorrow at 7.30 AM (GMT+1) in Amado with Round 2 of the Men’s event. The best seeded surfers including Jatyr Berasaluce (EUK), current regional ratings No. 12, will paddle out when Day 2 gets underway.
