How to use a Torque Wrench?

Surprisingly, torque wrenches are very easy to use, but some designs can be a little tricky for first-time users.

To use a torque wrench, the first thing to do is to place it on the fastener that you’ve already snuggled into a mount or designated hole. Next, ensure that you have a firm grip on the wrench’s handle, and then fix the end straight on to the fastener. From there, all you need do is to move it: depending on the situation, you can either go in a clockwise direction or counterclockwise direction. You will continue to move it until you get to your predetermined or intended torque level.

Depending on the particular type and design of your wrench, the process may differ slightly. You may need to do the guesswork for some, while others will light up, click, or buzz to indicate that you’re close to your desired torque level.

Some models will display your chosen torque value with your current torque level, while some others might not.

There are some models that need you to use adjust the knob manually, instead of separately setting one. In this case, ensure that you have set your desired torque level before you use it. How to calibrate your Torque Wrench

It takes some effort to calibrate a torque wrench, but it is necessary. It will be worth it in the long run, especially when you’re looking for a higher accuracy than the original one that came with the wrench.

The calibration process begins by measuring the length of your wrench. Measure from the square drive (the point you’ll be using to adjust your fasteners) to the handles. Ensure that you mark the sport with either a sticky label or a temporary pen. This is an important aspect of the calibration process.

After taking the measurements, put your wrench square drive into a vice and lock it, so it stays in one place. Do not lock it too tight so as not to damage your tool. However, you need to set it in a way that you can move it slightly.

To get the appropriate calibration settings, you’ll use 20 pounds to multiply the earlier measured distance. Then you get a 20 pounds weight or an equivalent and hang it using a thin rope to the handle. Make sure it doesn’t touch the ground. After marking the spot, measure the distance between your square drive and the spot, then multiply it by 20 pounds. After you’ve done this, you’ll then apply this formula “Torque setting x (1st measured distance / 2nd measures distance)”, to determine the applied torque.

How often should you calibrate your Torque Wrench?

Wrenches are precision instruments, and usually, they come with certificates that show that their readings will give you a 4% or less margin for error.

Professionals say it should be recalibrated once it goes over 5%, because of the error margin too much.

The general rule is that calibration should be done after 3,000 repeated use if it is used regularly, or every 6 months if it is not often put to use.

Tip for using a Torque Wrench

Do not use your torque wrench to loosen a bolt. You should only use it to tighten them. The thing is this when the bolt is tight, there’s a risk of applying too much torque, which may break it.
As soon as you’re done with your wrench, make sure to unwind it. What this does is that it resets the inner configuration that is basically a big Spring. Storing it after unwinding will remove the pressure on the spring. This increases its lifespan.

Every model is marked with the maximum torque force it can handle safely. Do not go beyond 25% of the maximum of this range. Doing otherwise puts too much strain on the innerspring of your wrench, and this shortens its lifespan.
