For those of you that haven’t seen the spectacle of the Blackies Classics Longboard Association Annual Halloween Costume Expo you are missing out…not just on the crazy costumes, party waves, and just plain silliness…but the stoke that goes into the gathering.
Yeah sure, surfing is a multifaceted experience, with contests, pros, and big sponsors on one side…guys who just want to get a little peak to themselves so they can log a little water therapy on another…and then you have “events” like this, a costume surf-off followed by the Blackies crew serving pancakes, donuts, and coffee to the surfers as they came out of the water. According to Orangecounty.com this was the 6th year of the event…but the Halloween costume surf has been going on in a less formal fashion for a long time, (besides, let’s be honest, a lot of times you can’t tell if someone is wearing a costume on a normal day at Blackies…hehe).
Anyway I love these get-togethers…they seem to really help create a sense of community around a classic spot, and more importantly bring a lot of “fun” out into the lineup, which sometimes even the best of us forget that is what surfing is really about.
I think this might actually be a picture of the hightide swampthing!
